Hawley Troxell Ennis & Hawley LLP, Idaho's largest law firm, traces its origins to the colorful career of James Hawley, the first Hawley to make a mark on the Gem State. In 1862, when only 15 years old, he made his way to Idaho's gold fields and within two years made enough money to bankroll a legal education.
Tradition has it that James Hawley tried more murder cases than any other lawyer west of the Mississippi. He was also involved in the largest water rights, timber and mining claims cases of the day. He was United States Attorney for Idaho before statehood, and settled in Boise in 1890, the year of Idaho's admission to statehood. In 1893 he began a private practice in Boise, and in 1896 along with William Borah successfully handled the appeal upholding the Women's Suffrage Act in Idaho.
The present firm of Hawley Troxell Ennis & Hawley was formed in 1964 when Jess Hawley Jr. and Jack Hawley joined forces with Robert Troxell and Paul Ennis. The Hawleys brought their litigation practice to the firm; Bob Troxell was recognized at the time as Idaho's premiere business lawyer; and Paul Ennis excelled in both business and litigation.
Maintaining a tradition of civic involvement, several partners have actively participated in successful campaigns for virtually every significant state office in Idaho on behalf of candidates from both parties. In addition, attorneys have been appointed as judges on the Idaho Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, the Federal district court bench and the District Courts.
Hawley Troxell attorneys have served and continue to serve on a wide variety of civic boards and governing bodies, have been selected as the Best Lawyers in America, have authored numerous articles and books, and are members of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.
Headquartered in Boise, the firm opened an office in Pocatello in 1985, expanded to Ketchum in 1992 and established its presence in Reno, Nevada in 2003.
The firm provides services beyond the Gem State, and represents its clients' regional, national and international interests. As a member of Lex Mundi, the world's leading association of independent law firms, Hawley Troxell partners with firms located around the globe for assistance with local law.
